Averitt Express plans to construct a $200 million campus on 104 acres near Charlotte Douglas International Airport. They'll add 211 positions over four years. The Tennessee-based transportation and supply chain management company will replace its current Westinghouse Boulevard location with this new facility at 2124 Shopton Road.

Construction starts now. Completion is slated for 2028, according to a press release from the city and Mecklenburg County. Workers in these new positions will earn an average of $81,769 per year.

"This Charlotte expansion represents one of the most exciting and distinctive facility investments in Averitt's 55-year history; it will be unlike any other Averitt location in the country," said Barry Blakely, president and chief operating officer at the company, according to a Mecklenburg County News Release. "We've been searching for several years to find the perfect location to establish this type of presence in the Carolinas, and what better place than in Charlotte, a growing logistics hub with an outstanding talent base, strategic location, and expanding infrastructure."

The positions span local drivers, over-the-road drivers, dock associates, diesel mechanics, sales teams, administrative support staff, and other logistics workers. Most won't require a college degree. On-the-job training will be provided, along with chances to advance.

The company started in 1958 as Livingston Merchant's Co-op, a small trucking operation that hauled dry goods across Tennessee. In 1969, the operation was incorporated and renamed Averitt Express. Charlotte got its first office in 1987. The company now has 182 workers in the area.

All five of the company's service units will operate from the new location: less-than-truckload, truckload, dedicated, distribution and fulfillment, plus integrated services. A two-story, 16,000-square-foot office will contain training rooms and collaboration space.

The campus will feature a 75,000-square-foot, 150-door cross-dock that can grow to 200 doors. Two warehouses will supply more than 500,000 square feet for distribution and fulfillment operations. Parking for over 400 trailers? Check. Fleet maintenance? Yes. Fueling stations and driver support facilities are also part of the development.

Transportation and logistics employment in the region has jumped 14% since 2020, now at 84,000 workers. Over the past 12 months, Mecklenburg County and Charlotte have collaborated to generate 6,568 jobs and more than $739 million in capital investment.
