A drunk driver smashed through a fence and barreled onto the range at Topgolf Charlotte University on Saturday night. Patrons hurled golf balls at the SUV. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police arrested the unidentified man at the scene after midnight.

The SUV zigzagged across the turf several times. Golfers in nearby bays swung at it. Video footage shows at least one person nailing a direct hit as the SUV passed close before retreating to the facility's edge.

Witness Laudyn Provost filmed the driver steering the SUV back and forth across the course. Provost said other people at the venue were "definitely shocked," adding that patrons on the first floor were startled since the SUV started driving toward them.

Provost said the driver wasn't saying or yelling anything, "but he did look very confused," according to WCCB Charlotte.

The driver was allegedly seen urinating in the parking lot before getting back behind the wheel. Then he headed onto the range. He caused at least $5,000 in damage to the fence he crashed through. After the driver left the course Saturday night, he drove off with the undercarriage dragging behind it. Provost said the man drove away before police arrived.

No statement has been issued by Topgolf or the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The driver's identity and any charges remain unconfirmed.

This marks at least the third incident of a car ending up at a Topgolf location in recent years. In October 2018, a stolen Honda CR-V ended up on the driving range at Topgolf Alpharetta when Benjamin Beasley drove through an open gate meant for employees.

In February 2026, Rakin Chowdhury crashed through the side of Topgolf Oklahoma City, coming to rest inside a lower-level bay. He was arrested on multiple charges, including aggravated DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of a controlled substance, and obstruction.
