Habit Burger & Grill shuttered its Mooresville spot. Wheatberry Bakeshop will close its South End storefront on Saturday, May 9. The California-based burger chain is shifting attention to different markets, while the bakery blamed financial strain.

A sign in the Mooresville restaurant's window confirmed the news. "While we've closed this Habit Burger & Grill location, you can still enjoy your chargrilled favorites at one of our nearby restaurants," the sign read.

That Mooresville site opened in 2023. It was the chain's sixth Charlotte-area restaurant. People can still grab burgers at Denver, Monroe, and Indian Land spots across North Carolina.

Habit Burger cooks made-to-order burgers, grilled chicken, and tuna sandwiches. Sides include onion rings and sweet potato fries. The menu also has hand-spun shakes.

"We are sad to be closing our little bakery," owner Haley Woodard told the Charlotte Observer in a statement. "We have loved serving the South End neighborhood and will miss the community we built there."

Wheatberry Bakeshop opened its first brick-and-mortar in 2025 after running as a pop-up in Charlotte for several years. The European-style bakery café is known for seasonal pastries and cakes.

Woodard thanked her team and the neighborhood. She said the closure isn't permanent.

"We don't know yet what the future holds for Wheatberry, but we would love to keep serving Charlotte great pastries," Woodard said. "Hopefully sooner rather than later!"

The two closures show different problems hitting restaurants in the area. The burger chain is shifting its focus to markets with more growth potential, while the bakery wrestled with recent financial pressures that proved too much to handle right now.

Wheatberry Bakeshop will serve customers through Saturday, May 9. The shop sits in South End.
