CMPD Animal Care & Control has launched trial periods up to 10 days for would-be pet owners. Space is scarce and dogs may be euthanized without homes.

Officials want nearby residents to apply and rescue animals that desperately need safe places. Trial periods work for those considering adoption but uncertain whether a dog will mesh with their household routines and space constraints.

According to WCNC, capacity problems plague operators at the facility, creating tough choices about which animals stay and which cannot. This program is an effort to solve the space crisis by letting potential adopters test whether a pet can thrive in their house before making a binding commitment.

The program arrives as staff face difficult choices. Euthanasia looms for dogs that remain unadopted or unclaimed through trial placements.

CMPD Animal Care & Control runs two spots in Charlotte. The main building sits at 8315 Byrum Drive in West Charlotte, close to the airport. A second location operates at 2700 Toomey Ave. in Charlotte, just off Remount Road near I-77.

Trial periods allow families to bring pets home temporarily. No immediate promises required. This window gives everyone — both animals and people — time to determine if the match succeeds, routines align, and if the living arrangement works.

Anyone interested can visit either location. The staff urges those contemplating pet ownership to use trial periods if they are concerned about adjustments, compatibility, or household fit.
