Kings Mountain Police have issued an alert. A fraudulent email scheme is targeting property owners. The scam uses fake invoices that appear to come from the city's Planning Commission.

The bogus invoice demands $3,500. That's 14 times what the city charges for similar services, which runs about $250.

City officials examined the documents and determined they're fraudulent. The Investigations Unit opened a case and is collaborating with other agencies to hunt down the perpetrators.

According to WCNC, several warning signs appeared in the scam messages. The emails came from Planning.CityOfKingsMountainNC@usa.com, which is not an official government account. Recipients were told to wire money via email instructions, something the city never does.

Kings Mountain doesn't request payments through third-party email accounts. It doesn't tell citizens to wire money. The inflated fee tipped off authorities too.

Police are tracing where the scam originated. Anyone who gets a similar email shouldn't pay or provide personal details. Don't share financial information either.

If you receive what looks like a fraudulent invoice, contact the Kings Mountain Police Department by calling 704-734-0444.
