Charlotte Fire Launches Mobile Campaign For Smoke Alarm Safety

The Charlotte Fire Department rolled out a new vehicle to spread the word about working smoke alarms. The mobile unit displays "working smoke alarms save lives" alongside contact details for the department's social media accounts.
Data from the National Fire Protection Association shows something striking: about 60% of fire deaths occur in houses lacking functional alarms. When working alarms exist, the chance of dying in a house fire drops by half.
This vehicle will circulate throughout the community. Charlotte Fire's Fire and Life Safety Educators team uses it as part of their push to teach people about fire prevention.
"Prevention starts with awareness. It starts with education. And it starts at home with a working smoke alarm," CFD said, according to Queen City News.
The NFPA says test your alarms once each month. Press the test button. Officials want homeowners to connect alarms so that when one sounds, all others activate too.
Install alarms in each bedroom. Put them outside sleeping areas. Place them on every floor, even the basement.
Closed doors slow smoke, heat and flames. Alarms help families escape during fires.
The Fire and Life Safety Educators team runs a third-grade program that follows North Carolina Department of Instruction standards. They aim to visit every third-grade class in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools within city boundaries, teaching kids how to prevent injuries and property loss when fires break out.
