Gaston County officials have issued a warning. Scammers are sending phony invoices to residents and property owners. The bills claim that payment is owed for zoning permits and services that were never requested.

These fake invoices mimic official documents with startling accuracy, according to authorities. They bear the county's name, logo, and letterhead. Victims receive bills stating that payment must be submitted to process or approve a zoning request, with instructions to wire money immediately.

County officials want to make one thing clear: these invoices didn't come from Gaston County. Don't send money. Don't share personal details. Don't provide bank account information.

Similar scams have surfaced in other counties and cities, authorities said. The scheme appears to be spreading, with fraudsters targeting property owners and businesses across multiple jurisdictions.

Unsure whether a bill is real? Call county offices at 704-866-3155. You can also contact the planning and zoning department at planning@gastongov.com to verify any correspondence.

Authorities released an example of the fraudulent bills. The sample demonstrates how convincing these fake invoices can appear to unsuspecting recipients.

Officials are asking residents to stay alert and spread the word. Tell neighbors. Warn local businesses. Residents should share this information with anyone who owns property. Only trust the county's official website and verified communication channels when seeking authentic information or official notices.
