Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has put out two calendar choices for 2027-28. Parents and residents can weigh in through a poll that closes Feb. 13. The school board will pick one on April 14.

Option one starts classes Thursday, Aug. 26, 2027. It ends Friday, June 9, 2028. Option two begins Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2027 — two days sooner. This version wraps up Wednesday, June 7, 2028.

The big difference? When teacher workdays and spring break fall. Spring break would run from April 10 through April 14 in Option 1, ending on Easter weekend. Option two shifts spring break to the week after, April 17 through April 21.

Both options pack in the same instructional hours. Each gives students two weeks off for winter break. Both districts schedule a teacher workday on Election Day, Nov. 2, 2027. The district will drop four early release days that happened in the past and swap them for two full teacher workdays instead.

State law controls when schools can start and end. Back in 2004, the North Carolina General Assembly passed a law. It requires public school districts to start no sooner than the Monday closest to Aug. 26. They must end no later than the Friday closest to June 11.

This restriction has frustrated some board members. Students must take end-of-course exams after they return from winter break. That means two weeks away from class material before tests.

Vice Chair Dee Rankin brought this up at Tuesday's board meeting. She suggested the board and community "put pressure on our General Assembly to do the right thing and allow calendar flexibility," to change the law so school can start earlier in August, according to The Charlotte Observer.

State law requires districts to have at least 185 instructional days or 1,025 instructional hours. The district plans to schedule at least 1,063. Why? That gives wiggle room if days need to be canceled because of bad weather.

A poll is open to the public. Residents can share thoughts on the two options until Feb. 13. Superintendent Crystal Hill will give her pick to the board March 10.
