Seven years in the making, the $346 million undertaking kicked off in 2019. It adds one express lane each way from Interstate 77 to U.S. 74, known as Independence Boulevard.
This stretch ranks among the busiest interstate sections around Charlotte. Officials haven't pinpointed an exact completion date yet.
Toll prices will shift depending on when you drive. Time of day matters. Day of the week matters too. The priciest average rates? Those hit the section running from Westinghouse Boulevard to Johnson Road.
"After approximately twelve months of operations, we expect to begin dynamic pricing, meaning that prices will fluctuate based on factors such as the number of drivers in the express lanes and average speeds to ensure traffic in the express lanes maintain a minimum of 45 miles per hour," the state says, per the Charlotte Observer.
High-occupancy vehicles won't get discounted or free travel in these lanes, which breaks from how the I-77 North Express Lanes operate.
Emergency vehicles get free passage. So do riders using Charlotte Area Transit System Vanpool rideshare services. Drivers with an NC Quick Pass account can slash their tolls by 50%, per state guidelines.
The work also brings one general-purpose lane each way between Rea Road and Providence Road. All drivers can use these without paying anything.
Orange barrels have lined this route since 2019, a constant reminder of construction underway. The work targets a south Charlotte portion of I-485 that handles massive traffic loads daily.
