The main branch of Charlotte's library in Uptown won't open its doors until spring 2027. Officials shared the one-year delay on Friday, stating the $137 million building needs extra care to stand strong for generations.

"This iconic building is something that's not been built before, and as we try to bring this vision to life but also ensure that 50-year lifespan, we are doing our due diligence in making sure that we are constructing this in a way that's sustainable and successful," Caitlin Moen with Charlotte Mecklenburg Library said, according to WCNC.

Construction started in 2024. The five-story structure will shine with open-air spots, a state-of-the-art theater, and smart systems woven into every corner.

The funds split between two sources. Local taxes cover $72 million, while private gifts make up $65 million. Teams still need to find $8 million more to finish the job.

At the site, work moves forward as planners fine-tune the eco-friendly specs. This careful approach means a building that will serve Charlotte well into the 2070s. The wait might be longer, but the result promises to be worth it.
