Green initiatives take center stage at UNC Charlotte this October. The Office of Sustainability packed the month with activities to boost environmental awareness across campus. Students and staff will join forces in programs that mix learning with action.
"These events are a great way for Niner Nation to work together and express their care for our campus environment and our people," said Mike Lizotte, university sustainability officer, according to Inside UNC Charlotte.
Starting today, volunteers will hit the trails. Armed with safety gear, they'll clean while walking or running the campus paths. The effort marks day one of this worldwide push for greener schools.
Tomorrow brings fresh chances to pitch in. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the East Village entrance transforms into a hub of activity. Students and staff will work side by side to refresh the grounds.
At 3 p.m., the spotlight shifts to the Atkins Library Halton Reading Room. There, Roger Tipton steps up to share tales from the Arctic. His talk, A Journey to the Top of the World: Science on the New Era, brings polar research to life.
Fresh additions spice up this year's lineup. Students can now join group bike rides or turn trash to treasure. Last Friday's workshop at the Atkins Library Makerspace showed how old items could become Halloween costumes.
The action spreads beyond campus borders. Charlotte's Sustainability Fair beckons, while the Catawba Riversweep needs helping hands. Bike fans can pedal through Sustain Charlotte's Biketoberfest.
Mark Oct. 15 for the Student Sustainability Summit. From 5 to 7 p.m., the Popp Martin Student Union fills with talks about earth-friendly projects.
Adventure calls during fall break. From Oct. 9 to 12, students can master backpacking skills at Roan Mountain State Park.
The month caps off with art and ideas. Global Studies 2025 opens its doors on Oct. 29, welcoming visitors to the Storrs Lambla Gallery from 1 to 3 p.m.
