Plans for Centre South will bring 329 new homes to Charlotte's South End district. The project sets aside one-fifth of units at lower costs when construction begins in 2026.
This new site sits where three areas meet: Uptown, South End, and Dilworth. It marks a shift in how Charlotte grows, mixing places to live and work in one spot.
"It's a significant densification on South Boulevard," said James LaBar, according to WCNC.
The builders took special care with their plans. "Since it sits right next to Dilworth, the development will respect that residential neighborhood, as it steps down or tapers down to the neighborhood while building density and height when going towards Uptown," LaBar said.
Workers will start by putting up the living spaces first. The full site should have stores, work spaces, and a place for visitors to stay by 2028.
Lower-cost units fill a big need near downtown. "That's a really important piece for Center City and South End, to be inclusive and bring together mixed-income neighborhoods," LaBar explained.
Donald Haney, who lives nearby, thinks more homes will help keep costs down. "Personally, I am very much in favor of increasing housing supply. That's how you keep it affordable," Haney said.
"People need to fit in somewhere," LaBar noted. "And so as an urbanist, right, more densification is a much smarter way to grow than sprawling out. So with this densification, you are getting larger buildings being located outside of Uptown."
