A massive $300 million investment will transform Kings Mountain, North Carolina, into the site of Walmart's next distribution hub. The project, set to add over 300 jobs by 2027, got the thumbs up for incentives from state officials on Sept. 30.
The sprawling site at 799 Sara Lee Access Road will stretch across 1.2 million square feet. Staff will handle big-ticket online purchases, from TVs to couches. Workers can expect yearly pay around $69,360, beating Gaston County's standard $52,180.
"As our e-commerce business continues to grow, this new fulfillment center will play a critical role in helping us serve customers faster," said Karisa Sprague, senior vice president of Supply Chain for Walmart U.S., in a press release.
State officials backed the project with $3.7 million in tax breaks spread across 12 years. Local support runs deep: Kings Mountain pledged $4.7 million while Gaston County added $5.6 million in perks.
"North Carolina offers global companies like Walmart a friendly business climate, strong workforce development programs, and a transportation network tailored to their logistics needs," said Governor Josh Stein per the release.
Kings Mountain beat out Spartanburg, South Carolina, for the project. The Keith Corporation built the structure, which sat ready for tenants since 2023.
The retail chain's roots run deep in North Carolina. With 214 stores, seven supply centers, and 62,300 workers statewide, Walmart spent $9 billion with North Carolina vendors in 2025.
The hub promises to pump $20 million yearly into nearby towns. State experts predict a $791 million boost to North Carolina's finances during the incentive term.
"This is a major economic victory for Gaston County," said state Senator Brad Overcash.
The site needs $58 million for building work and $90 million for machines. Doors will open in 2027, with new staff joining through 2028.
