Construction starts next fall on the first Wegmans in Charlotte. The 110,000-square-foot market will open in Ballantyne during fall 2026.
"This groundbreaking is a pivotal step forward as we prepare for opening day," Dan Aken, Wegmans Vice President of Real Estate and Store Planning, said in a statement to The Charlotte Observer.
The new site at 11550 N. Community House Road will add 450 permanent positions. During building, another 250 workers will join through local firm Frampton Construction Co.
Patrick McGuinness, who will run the Ballantyne store, announced support for the community with a $5,000 gift to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. "As we're breaking ground on our future store, we're also focused on breaking bread with our future neighbors by supporting Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina," McGuinness said, according to WCNC.
After 108 years in business, this family-run chain now serves customers in nine states through 110 locations. Charlotte marks their fifth spot in North Carolina, following their state debut near Raleigh five years ago.
The store joins a busy local market worth $10.4 billion, with 730 food stores competing for customers. Walmart leads sales, while Harris Teeter and Food Lion fill out the top spots.
Shoppers at the new store will find fresh food stations, including produce, fish, and meat. A market café will offer spots to eat both inside and out. The drink selection will feature wines and craft beers.
Next door, The Bowl at Ballantyne will bring new shops, including Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and Harriet's Hamburgers.
Staff hiring starts six months before opening day. The first dirt turns without public fanfare.
