Johnson & Wales Charlotte Rolls Out 3-Year Degree in Hospitality Management

Starting Fall 2026, Johnson & Wales University will offer a fast-track bachelor's degree in hospitality management at its Charlotte location. This 90-credit program stands out as the Southeast's first to mix quick completion with full campus life.

"At Johnson & Wales, we are committed to providing our students with educational opportunities that are affordable and transformative," said Chancellor Mim L. Runey per Queen City News. "Twenty-one years ago, North Carolina business and government leaders invited JWU to accelerate growth in these industries by launching a campus in Charlotte."

While keeping key subjects from the standard program, this version cuts extra classes to focus on vital skills. Students gain real-world skills through work stints during terms and breaks, counting toward their degree.

"This initiative reflects Johnson & Wales University's ongoing efforts to adapt to the evolving landscape of higher education," said Charlotte Campus President Richard Mathieu in a statement per BusinessNC.com. "We're not only meeting the evolving needs of our students but also driving workforce development in tourism and hospitality."

In June 2025, state officials broke with tradition. The North Carolina Board of Governors backed the program under current standards, moving past old rules that required 120 credits for graduation.

This move builds on success at the school's Rhode Island site. The Providence campus made waves this fall as the first U.S. location to try the three-year format.

The shift comes as the school faces tough times. Current Charlotte numbers sit at 1,270 students. Budget cuts hit hard this May, when the school cut 5% of workers at both sites.

The schedule sticks to normal term patterns: no year-round classes needed. Students start fresh: no AP credits required.
