A major road project will transform Old Monroe Road into a four-lane thoroughfare. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has set aside $197 million for the 6.5-mile stretch linking Matthews to Indian Trail's Sun Valley district.

Initial steps are moving forward. Tree removal has finished along the planned route. Meanwhile, crews push ahead with changes to the I-485 interchange. The massive undertaking splits into five distinct phases.

At Tuesday's Indian Trail Town Council meeting, Councilmember Clarence Alsobrooks shared key dates, as reported by Queen City News.

The first Union County segment stretches from I-485 to Morningside Meadow Lane in Stallings. With just a couple of property deals left to close, work should start by late 2026. This marks a crucial first step in the transformation.

Next up, the section from Morningside Meadow Lane to Indian Trail Road targets a 2026 kickoff. Property acquisition moves ahead as teams prep for utility line shifts. The work will bring big changes to daily traffic patterns.

The final piece runs to Wesley Chapel Stouts. While land purchases continue, construction won't begin until 2028. This delay allows time for careful planning and preparation.

A new median will run the full length of the expanded roadway. The current two-lane path starts as East John Street in Mecklenburg County, then switches to Old Monroe Road as it crosses county lines. These improvements aim to ease traffic flow and boost safety for local drivers.
