Getty ImagesA new state program called NC College Connect now offers guaranteed spots at 98 schools to thousands of high school seniors. The plan spans every public and private college in North Carolina, from small community schools to major universities.
"We piloted NC College Connect with community colleges and independent universities using a simplified application process," said Shun Robertson, senior vice president for strategy and policy with the University of North Carolina, according to Business North Carolina. "This year marks the first time we've offered direct admissions."
Students need a 2.8 GPA to qualify. Some schools ask for extra steps based on specific programs. Last year set records: the UNC System took in 250,000 students, up 2.2% from before.
Schools are acting now because of worrying signs ahead. Birth rates dropped sharply in 2010 to 1.93 children per woman, way down from 2.48 in 1970. This points to fewer college students by 2028.
Private colleges pitched in too. Their fund raised $2.7 million this year, with $438,936 going to student aid. The money backs programs that help students move from two-year to four-year schools.
Jeff Cox, who runs the state's community colleges, points to success stories like Mount Airy's nursing program. "The hospital was investing millions of dollars in hiring contract nurses to fill the gaps," Cox said. "But using apprenticeship programs, the partnership was able to build an adequate supply of nurses."
A newer effort called Project Kitty Hawk helps adults finish their degrees. Since 2023, 1,700 people have signed up at three big state schools. They can pick from 14 different bachelor's programs.
NC State's adult learning branch reached over 162,000 people last year. Their work supports big projects like Amazon's $10 billion data hub and JetZero's new $4.7 billion factory.
Right now, state officials are weighing a $73 million plan called Propel NC. It would change how community colleges get money. But as of September 2025, the final budget remains unclear.
