As students return to class on Monday, Aug. 25, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has launched fresh safety rules. The Standard Response Protocol sets clear steps for crisis management, with officers now stationed across school grounds.

School staff must now follow five key actions during emergencies: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. Each step comes with exact rules that everyone must know and practice.

"These dedicated officers work hard to build strong, supportive relationships with students and staff at their schools. They're there to protect, connect, and help make the 2025-2026 school year a great one!" the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department shared on social media per QC News.com.

Officers will watch over students as they arrive and leave school. Throughout the day, they'll walk the halls, aiming to become trusted adults while keeping watch.

The "I Love U Guys" Foundation created these safety steps. Students learn to stay in place during health issues, seal off buildings when danger lurks outside, and find shelter from threats inside. The rules also cover what to do if fire breaks out, gas leaks happen, or storms strike.

The new Infinite Campus Parent Portal puts school info at parents' fingertips. They can check grades, track attendance, and view schedules. Forms that once needed paper now work online, and schools can send quick updates to families.

Every student can attend, no matter where they come from. The schools don't ask about or keep records of citizenship status. Strict rules guide how police, including immigration agents, can visit schools.

As classes start, trained staff stand ready to help kids who feel worried or need extra care. Schools will guide parents through the new online system if they need help.
