Hurricane Erin is churning off the coast in the Atlantic Ocean. Many North Carolina residents are wondering if it will affect the Charlotte area.

The Queen City is not expected to deal with any direct impacts. WCNC reports that the track keeps the center of the storm well offshore, away from making landfall. Unfortunately, not all of the Carolinas are in the clear. The North Carolina coastline, specifically the Outer Banks area, is gearing up for the storm.

WCNC states, "Long-period swells generated by Erin are already marching toward our coast. These swells will bring dangerous rip currents, rough surf, and beach erosion. These are all hazards for swimmers and beachgoers, especially in the Outer Banks, because it will be closest in proximity to Erin. Even though the storm is hundreds of miles away, its energy travels through the ocean and piles up at the shoreline. Tropical storm force winds upwards of 40 mph will be possible Thursday with a Tropical Storm Warning in effect."

Charlotte is not expected to see much rain or strong winds from Erin. Our local forecast is expected to be from a cold front expected to hit the area.

Although we will not be impacted directly in the Charlotte area, now is the time to remember to be hurricane ready. As we're entering the prime hurricane season, it's best to make sure you have an evacuation plan prepared and emergency kits for your home.
