"Simply put, we're delivering on our commitment to meet our patients where they are," said Dr. Sid Fletcher, senior vice president at Novant Health, according to Newsbreak.com. "We know many residents in this area have traveled long commutes for care at our facilities in Charlotte and Salisbury. Now we can bring that same care closer to home for them."
Through its Certificate of Need process, N.C. Department of Health and Human Services backed the project. The medical center will offer emergency care, surgical services, lab work, and specialized procedures. Between hospitals in Rowan and Mecklenburg counties lies a 40-mile gap: this new facility fills that space.
State officials picked Novant's bid partly because it brings fresh competition to local healthcare. Their choice stems from careful study of regional needs.
A 2025 state medical study showed Cabarrus County would need 126 more hospital beds by 2027. This finding sparked proposals from both Novant and Atrium Health.
In a related move, officials gave Atrium Health permission to expand their Concord site. Their $208 million upgrade will boost capacity to 577 beds. Plans include a patient tower, more parking, and bigger emergency facilities: all ready by April 2031.
Novant runs medical centers across the Southeast: 19 hospitals and 750 clinics. With urgent care and specialty centers included, they manage 900 sites staffed by 40,000 workers.
As part of Charlotte's Advocate Health group, Atrium stands among America's top three nonprofit medical systems. They serve 6 million patients through 68 hospitals and 1,000-plus care sites, backed by a team of 155,000.
