A $30 million upgrade to student housing at North Carolina A&T State University finished just in time for the 2025-26 academic year. The work sets the stage for an expected surge to 15,000 students by 2026.

Workers fixed HVAC systems in 1,500 units and cleared mold from hundreds of rooms. The massive project tackled everything from wiring to water pipes. Short-term fixes gave way to lasting solutions.

"Students compete to get into A&T housing. We fully appreciate our responsibility to ensure it is attractive, comfortable, safe, and healthy," said Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life John Lowney, according to HBCU Gameday.

Student wishes shaped the changes. A quarter-million dollars went into gaming setups, ice machines, and better shared spaces. Input from students and staff will guide what comes next.

Fresh network cables now run through six dorms. Wi-Fi spots dot 42 apartment buildings. Study spaces got a boost with new computers, while smart boards fill dozens of learning areas.

New software called Roompact now runs the housing system. Flying cameras spotted areas that needed cleaning and fixes on building walls.

These changes strengthen A&T's position as the nation's biggest HBCU. Most students pick campus life here: double what other public schools see.

Toyota North Carolina joined forces through the Aggie Bridge Initiative. Their staff will visit to check and suggest ways to make things work better for students.

The final touches came on Aug. 14. Students return next week to find their upgraded home away from home, ready for the next wave of growth through 2026.
