State troopers launched a fresh safety push on Charlotte's I-485 loop. The 90-day effort aims to stop dangerous driving habits that put lives at risk.

A tragic crash near Dixie River Road sparked this action. The July 26 wreck killed six people. The youngest was just one year old. The oldest was 27. Three cars smashed together in the deadly incident.

"We're really taking an active approach to make sure fatal crashes like this don't happen in the future," First Sgt. Chris Knox said per Queen City News.

Data shows three main threats on the road. Drivers who don't watch the road kill. Speed kills. Not buckling up kills. Last year's stats paint a grim picture: speed caused nearly a quarter of the 1,600 deaths on state roads.

Questions still swirl around what triggered the July crash. Federal investigators continue their work to find answers.

One local driver painted a stark picture of daily risks. "People text while driving. They speed past you. They drift between lanes," he told reporters. "Nobody pays attention anymore. That's why we keep seeing these awful wrecks."

Knox stressed a key point about their mission. "If we write zero tickets but prevent deaths, we've won," he said. The focus stays fixed on saving lives, not writing tickets.

Police presence will spike through mid-October. State troopers will work side-by-side with city police and county deputies to watch the roads.

A seasoned driver shared wisdom for newcomers: "For any new drivers out there that are just getting a car or just getting their license, just remember that you're not just driving for yourself. You're driving for other people on the roads."
