Thirty-five new QR code signs now mark the county's most significant historic structures. These small black-and-white squares connect visitors to rich details about 14 key sites across Mecklenburg. With a quick scan, smartphones unlock stories buried in brick and stone.

"Many residents may not know the office they work in, building where they worship, or a house in their neighborhood has over a hundred years of history behind it," Historic Landmarks Director Stewart Gray said, according to wcnc.com. "These QR code placards are a quick way to discover the stories behind the structures that have shaped our community."

The signs stand at sites like the Matthews Heritage Museum, the town's oldest surviving structure. They also mark the rare Huntersville Rosenwald School #2 and the distinctive dome of Bojangles Coliseum. Each plaque opens a window to the past.

Visitors will spot the codes at Savona Mill's weathered walls and the stately Massey-Clark House. The signs also grace Dr. Whitley's old office, Reid House, Parkwood-Avenue ARP Church, and Franks House. The courthouse and Ratcliffe-Otterbourg House round out the marked sites.

A simple phone scan links to detailed site histories. The system works instantly: no apps needed.

Working with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission, staff protect vital pieces of local heritage. Their efforts have saved 375 landmarks. Old homes stand proud next to preserved schools. Historic cemeteries and farms tell tales of bygone days.

The commission picks new sites to save and steps in when landmarks face threats. They watch over renovations and teach others about these precious places.
