Getty ImagesA young Davidson student turned craft time into cash for penguins. The seven-year-old crafted bird feeders, bringing in $2,000 to support Sylvan Heights Bird Park's new exhibit.
With popsicle sticks and determination, Olivia Richardson worked beside her mom, Vanessa, to make gifts for donors. "I wanted to help since I love birdies," she told WNCT News.
The funds support the park's $1 million Penguin Point project. "Anything I can say, I don't think it's going to touch the enthusiasm [Olivia] has," said operations director Brent Lubbock, who plans to add space for more African birds.
Small gifts added up fast. While most pitched in $5 or $10, the steady stream of support kept mother and daughter busy with craft supplies. "It's impressive," Vanessa said. "She's got a strong love for birds: I've always found that fascinating about her."
The park invited the young creator to join their groundbreaking event this May. Visitors will see the finished habitat next summer.
At her house, two feathered friends named Love and Tweeter keep Olivia company. "They're just so cute and huggable. I just really love them, and they're also very interesting to learn about," she said.
Want to pitch in? Stop by Summit Coffee in Davidson on September 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Can't make it? Check out Richardson's website to give.
The bird sanctuary cares for thousands of winged creatures. Their new space will welcome more African species to join the penguin family.
